Beginning Stage II: Looking at "Constructs"

Well, I'm GIVING you the time :-)
Before we leap into our Stage II assignment, I think it's important to look back at our Stage I essays and reflect on what we've done so far (we've done a lot!).

To do that, I'd like you to reread your own essay. Prepare a cover letter addressed to me in which you walk me through your work-in-progress. Please address the following questions within your letter (though not necessarily in this order):

Give a one sentence summary of your literacy narrative. What do you want your audience to take away from your experience?

What do you think you got right about this assignment? Remember the four points I'm looking for (narrative, vivid details, significance and discourse).

What do you feel still needs work?

What would you like continued help/feedback on?

How does your essay fit into the greater conversation of writing studies?

I will be giving you a bit of class time to think about this, and I'll be using it as a guide to help me evaluate your essay and provide you with some feedback for further revisions. Please, put some thought into this assignment.

Once we wrap that up, it's time to start looking at STAGE II. There's going to be two parts of this assignment: 1. a short, informal group presentation of your construct and 2. an essay in which you discuss your definition of that construct.

Give us a slap in the face! Redefine your construct!
Here are the "Construct" choices:

College Writing
Good Reading
Peer Review
Revision
Research
Technology in the classroom

Studio Work

In your groups of 4, develop a definition of your construct, which you'll be responsible for "teaching" to the class (your audience)! How do you define your construct? Where does your definition come from? Where do you think you can find out more information on it (articles? experts?). Create some sort of a graphic representation of your construct and be ready to present to the class on WEDNESDAY. Your presentation should be about 5 minutes long and is informal.

Homework: Read the Stage II Essay Assignment under the writing assignments tab. Post here on the blog either 1. your idea as to what you're supposed to do (translate my big, long and wordy assignment into "student") 2. Ask a relevant question about the assignment or point out something that doesn't make sense to you or 3. Answer another student's question. Please have posted here on the blog in the comments section before noon on Wednesday.

Also, be working on your informal group presentations! Those are due 2nd period on WEDNESDAY, though you'll have a bit of time to work on those in class, too.

  1. On our stage 2 assignment we are to write our opinions on what we chose as our topic. (Good reading, college reading...ect.) We are also to back up our theorys and opinions with research and other peers opinions.

  2. I think you do a great job of providing an explanation here, Brittanie! Yes, thank you. We can think of "research" here rather loosely, though -- as long as you're comparing your views with other views, you'll be in good shape.

  3. Stage 2 writing assignment gives us the chance to express how we look at and think about a construct or topic we want to write about.

  4. For stage 2 we have to write about the construct we picked , we have to write our ideas and what other people think about it. This will give us the chance to know more about the topic we have chosen.

  5. Stage II writing will involve us students to write about the construct that we decided to write about. And also support it with our opinions and ideas to explain what we think about it. Although I still am not fully understanding what you mean by constructing?

    1. Hi Jacob, well, you're "constructing" a theory, taking bits and pieces from your sources and integrating it into your own thoughts. We can kind of think of it like how Flower talks about constructive reading, that we're using what's their from our research (readings, conversations, experiences) to create our own meaning. I hope this helps!

  6. For stage 2 we get the chance to write how we feel about the construct we have chosen and it gives us the chance to express how other people feel about it also. This will give us the opportunity to find out more about the topic.

    1. Hi Michael, you'll choose the ones that are most relevant to your discussion, maybe one or maybe two.

  9. For Stage 2 basically we need to answer the the bullet points, not all of them only the one that we think may guide us with our chosen construct.right? Can we use our own experiences an used them as a point of development.

    1. That's right, Isa! And yes, absolutely, draw on your experiences here. That can be one of your "sources" but do also include some outside source as well (whether it's the articles, your friends, other readings, or even ME!).

    1. Hmmm... not sure what you mean here, Robby! You might want to take a closer look at the assignment details :-) You're building a theory about your construct, and then explaining HOW you came up with it, basically.

  11. So when I will choose for example good reading. Can I write about my own experiences and what I consider good reading is, right?

    1. Hi Stanislava! Of course, yes, bring your own experiences into your paper. You're basically explaining your view of good reading (or any other construct) and explaining how it is you came to view it that way. In addition to your own experiences, though, do include some outside source, but that can really be anything!
